Duo FAQ for Ecampus
What is Duo?
Two-step login, powered by Duo, protects your OSU account by verifying your identity with two forms of ID:
- Something you know, such as your password.
- Something you have, such as a phone, hardware token or security key.

Why do I want Duo?
Duo is mandatory for everyone at Oregon State. You will not be able to log in to OSU systems until you activate Duo, and you will be locked out of Canvas and MyOSU.
The benefit of protecting your OSU account with Duo is that you can reduce the risk of someone gaining access to your account. If someone has access to your OSU account, they could:
- Change your financial aid direct deposit
- Commit identity fraud
- Read and send your email
- See student health records
How do I use Duo?
The Duo Mobile app for iOS and Android is the most popular option for authenticating with Duo.
We also support hardware tokens, security keys and even Touch ID on some MacBook laptops.

How do I take proctored exams with Duo?
Some Ecampus courses require you to take proctored exams. Duo authentication will be required when taking proctored exams, but you will not be allowed to bring most Duo devices (including cell phones and security keys) into proctored exam environments. Instead, you must use either a hardware token or generate a temporary Duo code.

The Duo Multifactor Authentication Token is allowed in proctored exam environments.
Ecampus recommends using a hardware token for Duo authentication because tokens are allowed in proctored exam environments. If you choose to use the Duo Mobile app or a security key instead of a hardware token, you will need to generate a temporary Duo code no more than 24 hours in advance of any proctored exam and bring the code with you to log into Canvas.
If you are unable to log into Canvas due to an issue with Duo, please contact the IS Service Desk at 541-737-8787 or submit a help request.
Which Duo device is recommended for Ecampus students?

The Duo Multifactor Authentication Token is available for purchase at the OSU Beaver Store.
Ecampus recommends using a hardware token. It is accepted for Duo authentication and allowed in proctored exam environments. The OSU Beaver Store sells the Duo Multifactor Authentication Token for $4.85 plus shipping.
Note: When ordering a hardware token or a security key, please consider shipping time to make sure you have the device in hand before your mandatory Duo deadline.
