Meet: Michelle Harris
Degree: B.A. in Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies
Year: Senior
Studying in: Washington
Hello, I’m Michelle, she/her pronouns. Like most Ecampus students, I’m older than students who attend OSU on campus, finally completing my bachelor’s degree at the age of 54. I decided to get my degree in women, gender and sexuality studies because I have worked in the healthcare field for over 20 years. In that time, I have noticed the need for increased diversity and empathy training, in terms of the LGBTQIA community and their consistent struggles in getting the care that they need.
One of my favorite classes was WR201, Writing for Media. I found the ideas to be interesting, and the assignments pushed me to think outside of the box. Writing is something that I like to do, but I had never thought about how to put words and visual components together to make a story flow from one point to another before taking the course. The instructor was engaging and offered up many helpful suggestions during our weekly assignments.
I chose Oregon State University for several reasons. I lived in Corvallis for many years and graduated from Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, so I was very familiar with the OSU campus. And, in 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 lockdown, I was researching how to complete my degree and find a program that would fit into my career goals. OSU checked all of the boxes that I wanted, and I am grateful that my Ecampus experience has been one of flexibility with top-notch instructors and the ability to work on my own time to complete the classes that I am taking.
Meet: Erin Traub
Degree: B.S. in Psychology
Year: Junior
Studying in: Virginia
Hi, I'm Erin! I'm working on my B.S. in Psychology at OSU through Ecampus. I live in Northern Virginia, near Washington D.C., I have three Goldendoodles and I love traveling, the beach, baking, and Marvel movies.
My favorite class that I've taken so far at OSU was Professor Shelton's WGSS 325, Disney: Gender, Race, Empire. I've watched Disney movies since I was a little kid, and it was really fun to take a more thoughtful look at the messaging and gender roles in the films. Professor Shelton was also amazing, they were so engaging and had a lot of great feedback on my work throughout the course.
I chose OSU because my grandfather graduated from Oregon State in the 1950s and absolutely loved it. He loved the school, Oregon, and his classmates. He kept in touch with some of them, and they even got together for a 60-year reunion in the 2010s. I was doing my senior year of high school online when my grandpa started getting sick. Taking my classes online meant that I got to spend a lot of time with him during his last year and hear his stories about Oregon, being in the Navy and traveling the world. He passed away in January of my senior year, and I knew that I wanted to honor him and go to the school that he loved so much.
